The Remains of the Day

Kazuo Ishiguro ·

A slow novel about a man who is very good at not noticing things. Almost everything important happens in what Stevens chooses to leave out, and the pleasure of reading it is learning to hear those gaps.

The road trip frame is quietly clever. Each stop gives him a reason to remember, and each memory is a little more revealing than he intends. By the last chapters I was reading his careful sentences mostly for what they were trying to hold back.

Not much happens. I could not put it down.
